Use IT to Mature your Enterprise!

IT Maturity Introduction

Just as effective processes were built for software development years ago, IT Maturity has created an effective set of IT processes around business enhancement. This allows IT departments to focus on accelerating the business as opposed to commodity software development activities.

This evolves IT and the broader enterprise into focusing on how technology can be used to impact and improve business function, and also further to how IT can be used for the maturation of the larger enterprise. This perspective allows the construction of “Leadership Media/Enterprise Media” analogous to “Social Media” that is directly applicable to Enterprise Communication.

Using this new perspective IT evolves into four separate activities: Business Enhancement, Technology Advancement to enable the business enhancement, Vendor Integration to utilize external expertise to make the business enhancement happen, and Leadership Improvement (see below).

IT Maturity offers both online training and onsite training in this new perspective, as well as associated Enterprise Architecture services.


1) As an example, IT usually spends a great deal of time identifying detailed requirements, doing development, and then testing to make sure each of the requirements are realized. However, more often than not business usage of many of the requirements is not realized. The IT Maturity Usage Tracking tool focuses on the creation of mechanisms to track if usage is happening and is as intended . 

2) Business Comparison is one of the more innovation focused IT Maturity tools. It utilizes the IT Maturity Business Functions Map which is a high-level map of all of the business functions that an enterprise does. 

The Business Comparison tool creates automated search tools around employee login pages so that whenever employees log in they see links to all different types of searches associated with the business function they are responsible for (e.g. patent searches, book searches, web page searches, academic searches, and product searches). Employee usage of the links can be tracked (see ITMM Search as a raw example of this type of automated search tool focused on employee specific topics).

Additionally, links to internal innovation process flow sites can sit next to the search links so that employees can input ideas for improvements along with following associated process steps for bringing those ideas through to fruition. Employee usage of the innovation process flow links can also be tracked. In this way, processes are built to concretely bring all employees into the activity of enterprise improvement.

One of IT Maturity’s most important slogans is:

    Exceptional Leaders are NOT Heroes, Instead Exceptional Leaders Methodically and Continuously Create Heroes.

The Business Comparison tool just described, along with other IT Maturity tools, helps insure that each employee is methodically and continuously developed in the direction of becoming a hero.

3) One of the more complex IT Maturity tools is that of Leadership Principles. Most leadership research  and theory is focused around individual leader psychology. IT Maturity takes an alternative IT perspective of leaders as entities operating within organizations. The motivation for this perspective is that leadership outside of an organization is meaningless. IT Maturity Leadership includes principles in five different categories: Organization, Management, Extent, Culture, and Vision.

The Culture leadership principle of “Risk Taking” receives a significant amount of attention at the executive level in today’s business world. However, formalized processes are typically missing. IT Maturity provides such processes.

When investigating Risk Taking in greater depth you realize that there are many different types of risks . Some types of risks make sense to take, other types of risks don’t make sense to take due to potential consequences. IT Maturity provides mechanisms to track and measure not only how much more risk taking is actually being done within an enterprise, but also to measure which types of risks are paying off and which are not.   

Getting Started

The normal first step is to take the online IT Maturity Method Leadership Improvement course.

As a  second step IT Maturity provides onsite training for IT and enterprise teams. This is a one day session where IT Maturity comes to a customer’s site and walks through a presentation of all of the IT Maturity tools along with an interactive discussion and final report of how these tools impact the specific customer.

The next step is a four-day interactive assessment where IT Maturity works with your team to create a roadmap for implementation of IT Maturity tools within your enterprise called an Enterprise Maturity Architecture (EMA).  The general rule is that one IT Maturity Office (see below) is covered each day.

IT Maturity Method™ (ITMM) Offices

With Business Enhancement Office (BEO) training, you will see your IT team listening to your business team in the identification of IT applications and services that enable each function of your business. Your team will learn how to track and measure the impact of IT on each of these functions and how to tune and advance to enhance business functions.

Using BEO training your team creates an integrated map of what your enterprise does, including how teams interact. Additionally, quantitative and qualitative assessments of business usage of IT are created, as well as tools for across the board ongoing investigation of how to improve every business function, along with a quantitative analysis of which IT business function improvements and advancements are most advantageous for your specific enterprise. With Technology Advancement Office (TAO) training, you will feel the advantages of your team focusing their efforts on identifying technological advancements that directly pertain to the processes of your business.

The TAO provides a non-bureaucratic one stop view of an enterprises suite of technology. Additionally, tools are provided for measuring, tracking, and management of technology including: scaling, performance, change, and  business impact. With Vendor Integration Office (VIO) training, you will look at how to leverage diverse vendors effectively for activities that directly support and enhance the processes of your business. You will learn how to pull your legal, negotiating, IT, and other staffs out of their individual towers and into an integrated team, where understanding is created for the business context they operate in, and the impact that their work has upon that business context.

The VIO provides processes to foster a spectra of strategic to tactical (including emerging) vendor relationships. This includes integration of RFx, Contract, Negotiation, Vendor Performance, and other processes with IT. Click here for more details.

Leadership Improvement Office (LIO) training will make you feel that your team is not only defining effective leadership principles and organizational structures, but also measuring, tracking and tuning the usage of those principles and structures on an ongoing basis.

The LIO fosters the methodical and continual creation of heroes by providing a set of tools to insure all enterprise participants methodically and continuously learn how to apply leadership principles. This includes mechanisms to track and tune usage and effectiveness of each principle.
